Queens and princesses
occupy an almost iconic place in youth culture, from the fairy tale cartoons to college pageants, yet awareness and knowledge
of true Queens in Africa where they are common, is almost non-existent.
In
November 2012, the Queen Mothers of Ghana, West Africa will journey to the United States for a historic visit to Atlanta,
Georgia. We invite you to meet QUEEN MOTHER NANA AMA AMISSAH
III, Paramount Queen of Mankessim Traditional Area (and President of the Central Region Queens Association of Ghana)
at the Official Georgia Welcoming Ceremony & Youth Program, on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 2:00PM at
the Atlanta University Center, Robert Woodruff Library.
Educators and students can gain much from this visit through their introduction to "African
Queenship". Traditionally, Queens – known as Queen Mothers - held active authority and leadership roles in
pre-colonial West Africa. This tradition of women sharing sovereignty with kings and male rulers is very much alive on the
great continent.
During the Youth Program students will witness
a royal tribute performance featuring some of Africa’s most renowned queens and kings that will culminate with the legendary
story of Ghana’s most beloved Queen Mother, "QUEEN YAA ASANTEWA & THE
GOLDEN STOOL." This inspiring pageant of African leadership is presented by Queens Historical Society, adapted
from their signature play, "Queens of the Nile, Now." Masterful storytelling, spirited dance, exquisite
costumes and a majestic symphony composed by STEVIE WONDER will provide a culturally relevant and responsive
event for all students. Academic Standards will come alive for:
Grades K-5: Language Arts (Storytelling, Heritage)
Grades 6-8: History (Ancient Civilizations, Africa)
Grades 9-12: Performing & Visual Arts (Cultural Context)
